Tammy Hurley: Why I’m a Part of OGT

By Tammy Hurley, OGT Volunteer Concessions Team Leader

I knew about the theater before I moved to Greenbelt in 2016.  I had no idea of its background or it being non-profit. I did know it showed the kind of movies I was interested in seeing, which was really good enough for me.

When I moved to Greenbelt I made sure I was within walking distance of the town center, which included the theater. Slowly, I learned more about the background of the theater from the citizens of Greenbelt, usually in the square or while shopping in the CoOp.  The more I learned, the more I wanted to get involved.

Being motivated to volunteer in the community, I figured the theater would be a perfect fit.  Little did I know how connected I would become. Now, two years later, when I speak about the theater, I use the pronoun “we” because that’s how I feel. I am very much a part of this organization.

In turn, the organization is very much a part of the community. I am proud of the way we reach out to the community and make sure everyone who comes through our doors feels welcomed. The staff and my fellow volunteers form an amazing team to keep this treasure of a movie theater alive and vibrant. I can’t believe I have already been volunteering for two years. It’s true what they say, time flies when you’re having fun.

I am excited about our new renovations and continuing to provide entertainment to our tight knit community throughout the changes. It’s going to be a learning experience for all of us, but I am committed to the challenge. I hope you are too. Together, we’re building up a whole new OGT.
