Executive Director Dr. Caitlin McGrath’s response to Governor Hogan’s and Angela Alsobrooks’ reopening plans.
As you have likely heard, Governor Hogan is now allowing movie theaters to reopen at 50% capacity. The Old Greenbelt Theatre will not be reopening immediately, however. With the increasing availability of vaccines, we do foresee the reopening of the cinema in the near future, hopefully by the beginning of summer. But for the time being, our staff do not qualify for vaccination appointments, and we will not reopen until our staff have had the chance to be fully vaccinated. While this decision may come as a disappointment to members of our community who are looking forward to resuming the activities they love, we are committed above all to the safety of our staff and patrons.
OGT is fortunate not to have to make this decision based solely on financial need. Through a combination of member support, support from the City of Greenbelt, our own grant-writing efforts, and radical cost-cutting measures, we will be able to survive until we are able to reopen safely.
We thank you again and always for your kind words, contributions, and encouragement this past year. It has helped keep us going. And we are looking forward to coming together again as a community to enjoy the experience that only the big screen can provide.
Also, we will resume our partnership with the Greenbelt Recreation Department to bring you outdoor movies beginning April 2nd–stay tuned for titles and times next week! And we will continue to offer rentals to members and our Friday night popcorn and snacks pick-up service to everyone.
We will keep you posted as the situation develops, and you will be the first to know when the cinema reopens.
See you (soon!) at the movies,
